Description: Album of photographs relating to members of the Student Christian Movement in New Zealand who attended conferences and camps between 1922 and 1935. The only person identified in captions was Dr John Raleigh Mott, an American who was closely involved with establishing the Student Christian Movement all around the world, and who attended the New Zealand leaders' conference at Waikanae in 1926. Two others have been identified by a family friend. They are the Rev. Herbert Newell, and Eaton Hurley. Conferences and camps were held all over New Zealand, including Ashburton (1922-23); Solway (1923-24, and 1926-27); Waimate (1924-25); Cambridge (1925-26); Dr. Mott's leaders' conference at Waikanae (1926); Brighton, Hutt Park and Campbell's Bay (all held in 1927); Campbell's Bay and Brighton (in 1928); Feilding (1930-31, and 1934-35); Bombay (1932-33); and Geraldine (1933-34). There are also photographs of the World Student Christian Federation Conference in Java in 1933. Recalls the Depression, World War II and life at boarding school. Describes her first job at a travel agency, travelling to England on a boat, her job in London and travel in Europe in 1951. Discusses being a New Zealand woman in London, being presented at Court and her return to NZ after three years. Describes working in Auckland before marriage in 1955 and being on a farm in Bombay (South Auckland) with husband John. Recalls helping on the farm, loneliness, a limited social life, having four children and being involved with the local school. Describes their move to a farm in Porangahau in 1979, her husband's illness after being there a year and the sale of the farm. Describes their move into Hastings. Talks about widowhood and her job with Red Cross for twelve years and association with Woodford House Old Girls. Comments on her preference for Single Tranferrable Vote (STV) over the MMP electoral system. Discusses the location of the Hawkes Bay Hospital and the local body elections. Talks about gardening, the local harvest, painting, a writing group and her role in Speaker Forum organising women speakers from around the country to come to speak in Hawkes Bay. Talks about her grandchildren. Discusses Jim Bolger going to the Asian Pacific Trade Organisation meeting, the health sytsem and the arrival of Canadian firm McCains in Hawkes Bay. Comprises letters written on board the P & O ship 'Stratheden' on a voyage from London to New Zealand in 1938. The writer comments on the weather, life on board the vessel and the ports and seas visited during the journey, including the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean. Description: Unbound photograph album and pages comprises photographs of hydroelectric power and electricity transmission, probably taken by Laurence Earle from 1926 to1928. Photographs are mainly of completed and under construction work for hydroelectric dams and electricity pylons (known at the time as 'towers').The album also contains photographs of powerhouses around the North Island, scenic images taken on location, and worker's campsites. Images of fieldwork include in-construction and erection of electricity towers at Hobsonville, East Tamaki, Greenhithe, Penrose-Takapuna, Panmure and Bombay; as well as cabling installation, bullock teams, survey equipment, construction equipment and dredging machinery. Hydroelectric dam images feature pipelines, dam spillways, dam walls and turbines. Photographs with interior and/or exterior views of powerhouses include the Waikaremoana power scheme, the Arapuni Dam, and Penrose substation. Scenic landscape views include Rangiriri swamp, Waihi, Waiau river and gorge, Mangaore and Poutere lake. Most photographs have accompanying caption inscriptions, ranging from 1926 to 1928, which describe locations, structures, campsites, and bridges. Some photographs feature workers at campsites, or working on tower construction and/or undertaking fieldwork. Photocopy of Mangahao dam diversion tunnels scheme, which accompanied the album on arrival, held in Photographic Archive backfile. Title supplied by Library. Description: British infantry and cavalry on the march on a road cleared through dense bush The image is a reworking of the Illustrated London News image published in 1863. It may have been prepared as a book illustration. It appears to be a proof copy and is on a blank sheet with no surrounding text and is markedly smaller than the Illustrated London News version, which is 160 x 235 mm. Another copy of the I. L. N. version is held in E-372-f-003-2. The image was formerly catalogued by the Library as Troops passing through wooden country along the Great South Road; also as Shepherd Bush. The derivation from the Illustrated London News was not recognised. Other Titles - Former titles - Troops passing through wooded country along the Great South Road.
