Operated in Queen Street, Auckland, between 1869-1876. The manager was John McGarrigle who operated from the mid 1860s to March 1874. Maori negatives purchased by Burton Brothers.

He wears a European cloth jacket and shirt, and jewellery around his neck: a glass fronted locket with a portrait visible, and a pendant [probably pounamu]. The name attributed to the person in this photograph is based on the likely match to the person in PA2-0103. The person in PA2-0103 had been identified in 2013 by the Curator of Ethnography at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum as a match to the person captioned as "Paul Bates Bay of Islands" in a carte-de-visite held by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. The person in this photograph was identified in the Facial Recognition project results as a likely match to the person depicted and identified in photograph PA2-0103. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s). Processing information: The photograph described in this record was included in a Library Facial Recognition project conducted in 2018. The project used an open source Python algorithm and verification by staff to find facial matches across a dataset of digitised carte-de-visite photographs held by the Library.
