Description: 1862 Hopkinson-Cope printing press in Alexander Turnbull Library collections. Photograph was taken on the ocassion of its donation by the Government Printing Office to Alexander Turnbull Library on 2 July 1958. Press was used to produce 'Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke I Runga I Te Tuanui', a Maori language newspaper established in 1863 and edited by John Gorst. For futher information see 'Book in Maori' p. 763 S 15

Mentions his family background in printing industry with his great grandfather (c1870) being the sub-editor of the Oamaru Mail. Talks about his apprenticeship at Thos. Bracken & Co printers in Oamaru for 5 years. Refers to Tom Bracken the owner being the grandson of Thomas Bracken, the poet. Describes the various jobs he did during his 10 years working at Brackens. Mentions the other printing houses in Oamaru. Describes taking over Bob Ewsome's business and running it for 30 years, until he sold it to Mike Lanigan who eventually amalgamated with Brackens. Description: Remains of the house built in Paihia for Bishop William Williams. The house later held Church Mission Printing press. Photograph taken by J M McDonald. Source of descriptive information - Title and historical note from Library client. Relationship complexity - Other later images of the ruins are at PA5-0021 and PA1-o-141-90. This was a stone and plaster house and, after Williams left to go to Te Waimate, was occupied by Charles Baker, before being used to accommodate the Church Mission printing press. William Colenso occupied it with the press 1839-1842 then John Telford 1843-1845. Description: Albion flatbed-style printing press, thought to date to 1862. '96 year old printing press built in England in 1862. Used in the Waikato to print a newspaper in Maori to counter a propagandist newsheet published by King Country tribes'. (Note in Donations Book, vol 5. Additional note in pencil) 'Hopkinson Cope Albion Press' . Also known as Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke Other Titles - Te Pihoihoi Mokemoke The newspaper in Maori was edited and published by John Eldon Gorst (1835-1916), who was born in Engalnd and arrived in New Zealand in 1860. It was Gorst's own press that produced the five issues of 'Te pihoihoi mokemoke' before it was forcibly removed by members of the Ngati-maniapoto; Gorst himself was expelled from the Waikato, and eventually returned to England where he became a significant figure in British politics The printing press was returned to the Library in April 2015, with a view to possible restoration Quantity: 1 curio(s).
