Description: Discusses her career in physical chemistry applied to biological systems. Recalls her original degree in chemistry, physics and mathematics followed by an MSc and PhD in physical chemistry. Mentions her preference to study physics was obstructed by the fact that women were allowed to go to stage one physics only when she studied. Describes marrying and having children, ten years break in her career, part-time work and the return to a full-time career at the age of forty-eight. Describes her job at the Physiology Department at the University of Otago, her breakthrough explaining how the behaviour of water inside cells is different from ordinary water and how this explains what goes on inside cells. Comments on the role of intuition in science and her belief that science is as creative as literature or art.
