Description: Edna Hoskins recalls first involvement with embroidery when a friend invited her to classes to learn how to do Hardanger work. Refers to Miss Helen Moran at Dunedin King Edward Technical College. Outlines the formation of the Otago Embroiderers' Guild with the first meeting in Carnegie Hall, 1961 and Miss Helen Moran first President and Mrs S Arnoid Honorary Secretary. Speaks about Mrs Kay du Toit. Recalls acquiring materials from the following stores, Penrose, DIC, DSA, Brown Ewings, and a shop owned by Miss Helps. Refers to the changing cityscape. Describes Helen Moran. Refers to cloths made by women for their `Glory Boxes'. Mentions community classes at the School of Art run by Mrs Desi Allen. Discusses the influence of Maori design and adapting a Maori design from a child's book. Refers to the use of native plants to dye wool. Description: Stella Fitchett recalls first introduction to embroidery ca 1934 at the age of seventeen. Talks about Helen Moran who taught embroidery at King Edward Technical College, Dunedin. Describes embroidery done by mother and describes Richelieu, a name given to forms of embroidery. Comments that all mother's embroidery was sold at bazaars or raffled, as father was vicar of St John's Anglican Church, Roslyn, Dunedin, which ran two bazaars each year. Comments that in those days women didn't go out to work but were willing to do voluntary work. Refers to World War II and recalls joining the WAAFS (Woman's Auxiliary Air Force) and involvement in making toy animals. Elaborates on how soft toy making continued after the war. Describes the kneeler project which took 45 embrodierers 200 hours over three years to make. Recalls working on Church vestments and refers to Shona Johnstone (foundation member and second President of the Otago Embroiderers' Guild). Refers to Dean Hurst. Comments that father became Archdeacon of St John's, and later Bishop of St Paul's Anglican Cathedral. Refers to AAW (The Association of Anglican Women). Discusses other interest - Silver-smithing. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by William Alexander Sheddan; brief history of the farm and family; notes on farm succession; obituaries for David Sheddan and his wife; poem (tribute to Annie Kathleen Sheddan on her 80th birthday) entitled `Memories of Mosswood'; photographs. Original owner was David Sheddan from Scotland who obtained 49 acres in the Otago Survey District at Tapanui in 1893. In 2005 the property named Mosswood was owned by William Alexander Sheddan, and farmed by his daughter Carey Sheddan and others. It was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. W A Sheddan is the grandson of David Sheddan. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Describes grandmother as an embroideress working vestments and linen for the Ashburton Anglican Church. Moved to Anderson's Bay, Dunedin after marriage in 1939 and recalls joining Miss Moran's evening class ca 1945-1947. Talks about the `Chapel Kneeler Project' and husband's involvement making slate frames. Refers to Shona Johnstone who was in charge of materials. Recalls being President of the Guild 1967-1968. Describes move from embroidery to pottery and later interest in spinning and weaving. Refers to Dean Hurst who formed St Paul's Cathedral Embroiderers' Guild and to the next Dean, Timothy Raphael, who thought there was too much embroidery and closed the guild.
