Description: Photographs of New Zealand military personnel serving in the Pacific theatre during World War 2, 1943-1945, taken by various photographers and compiled for official purposes. Many individuals identified are listed above, but while many others are identified in group portraits they are not named above. Amongst the official NZ photographs there are a few from the official British war photographs. Signals personnel train at the New Zealand School of Signals in New Caledonia; New Zealanders construct roads on Vella Lavella; the Post office at Vella Lavella; the boot repair section; arrival of Xmas mail in New Caledonia. Works services engaged in construction of the NZ General Hospital No 4; hospital wards; wounded and sick soldiers with nursing staff; and convalescents; Xmas dinner at the Artillery Training Dept; New Year function at the No 4 General Hospital (Boguen Detachment); an ice cream plant amenity provided by the NZ National Patriotic Fund Board. Field maintenance camp in the Solomons. Description: This collection includes two albums of photographs compiled by Charles Morris Woodford, taken during a voyage to and residence in the Solomon Islands from April to October 1886, and additional undated loose photographs. The collection includes images from the villages Aola and Fauro in the Solomon Islands. Images include village life, canoes, native animals, customs and the natural environment as well as Woodford’s life and Government residence in Tulagi, Solomon Islands. Additional photographs from Rabaul, Madang, New Britain and New Ireland in New Guinea. Charles Morris Woodford was born in 1852 and educated at Tonbridge School in England. He settled in Suva about 1882 and from Fiji visited Kiribati (the Gilbert Islands group), as Government agent on the ketch Patience. In 1886, as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he made the first of three successive explorations of the Solomon Islands, especially Guadalcanal, where he was the first white man to penetrate the interior to any distance, collecting natural history specimens for the British Museum. Description: Two images. The upper one, based on an original by Wilhelm Gottlieb Tilesius von Tilnau shows a burial ground in Nuku Hiva with two effigies seated on a raised platform between two sheaves of bound stalks or branches. Two figures stand in the right foreground, and there is a columned shelter or dwelling in the right background, beneath rocky volcanic peaks (cf A-318-034, done in 1804 on Krusenstern's voyage). The lower image shows a canoe with a triangular sail. There are seven figures on board, the one at the left at the stern using a large paddle to propel the boat. The lower picture shows some similarities to William Hodges' "Resolution Bay in the Marquesas" of 1777. The Isola Mandana may be the Marquesas, which were discovered by Mandana in the late 16th century. Also compare with A-318-033, "Polinesia - Piroghe delle isole Nuca-iva". Charles Morris Woodford was born in 1852 and educated at Tonbridge School in England. He settled in Suva about 1882 and from Fiji visited Kiribati (the Gilbert Islands group), as Government agent on the ketch Patience. In 1886, as a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society he made the first of three successive explorations of the Solomon Islands, especially Guadalcanal, where he was the first white man to penetrate the interior to any distance, collecting natural history specimens for the British Museum.
