Description: Four similar promissory notes, each signed by publican Rowland Davis of Wellington. Each shows an arrangement of text, with the words "1 shilling" in a black panel at lower left. Notes are individually dated and hand-numbered in ink: 5 (20 September), [1?]8 (22 September), 27 (24 September), 29 (24 September) On 20 September 1845 a meeting in support of a petition against the misgovernment and "mad pranks" of Governor Captain Fitzroy was held at the Aurora Tavern; one of the main speakers was Isaac Featherston. Mr R[owland] Davis was on the committee drafting the petition. See article in Nelson Examiner and New Zealand Chronicle, Volume IV, Issue 185, 20 September 1845, Page 115. One might speculate that one of the notes (dated 20 September 1845) could have been written at the meeting. Quantity: 4 b&w art print(s).
