Denton, Laurie, 1884-1960

An accountant who was born in Wellington, later lived at "Ackworth", Henry Street, Hastings. See Wise's Post Office Directory (1914). Known as Laurie when young. Photograph as a young boy, taken circa 1890s at Fernhill, Woolcombe Street, Wellington, the home of George Denton (1833-1910). Son of George and Eliza Annie Denton. Description: Photographs, chiefly of the Wellington area, probably taken by Frank J Denton. A number show the house `Fernhill' in Woolcombe Street (now part of The Terrace), Wellington, views from the house and its gardens. Portraits in clude Laurie Denton, Tom Tolley (locksmith), Alfred Bennett and his family, Mrs Denton Snr, Mrs Waters (had a grocery shop in Dixon Street), G L Adkin (as a boy), Miss Dixon (of the aerated water family, the Dixons of Dixon Street), George Butler (artist), and Beaglehole (David Ernest Beaglehole, father of Professor Ernest Beaglehole, and Professor John Cawte Beaglehole). Also includes photograph of a portrait painted by George Edmund Butler of his father Joseph Cawte Butler (maternal grandfather of John Cawte Beaglehole). Views include Dannevirke, the upper reaches of the Manawatu River, Waipukurau Lake, Tavistock Hotel, the rail and foot bridge across the Waipawa River between Waipukurau and Waipawa, Hastings Post Office; motor and horse-drawn buses which run between Hastings and Havelock North; house under construction in Henry Street, Hastings (house named Ackworth, owned by Laurence Denton, accountant); views of Cape Kidnappers and the gannet rookery; Ed James and family at their seaside bungalow at Te Awanga; views of Napier and Ahuriri; the Taradale Road embankment over the Tutaekuri River, the Ahuriri Lagoon and mudflats; Marine Parade, Napier showing Norfolk pines, the Municipal Baths and a monument to "six brave men drowned in floods while rescuing people at Clive".
