Millers Department Store

Department store in Christchurch. Modernist building located at 163-173 Tuam Street, Christchurch. Designed by architect George Hart to house Millers Limited's clothing factory and department store, and opened in 1939. Notable for its curtain wall construction and having the first escalator in the South Island. The building was bought by Christchurch City Council in 1978, renovated and reopened as the Christchurch City Council Civic Offices in 1980. Damaged in the Feb 22 2011 Canterbury earthquake and listed for partial demolition (see NZHPT #1856).
