Description: Talks about her education first at Correspondence School, then Hunterville school, New Plymouth Girls' High school and Canterbury University where she completed an MA. Details her early interest in reading and writing; the expectations of her family for her to become a journalist; the various occupations of women in her family; her foray into journalism at age 14 with the Taranaki Daily News (as a school stringer); went on to work at the Christchurch Press and then the Southern Cross where she compiled the women's pages. Discusses work at Radio New Zealand and then marriage to John Reece Cole; went to Indonesia with him where she was a radio and television correspondent for ABC; on return to New Zealand worked in advertising as well as freelancing; became a television critic for the Dominion; in 1973 was appointed on to the Broadcasting Council of New Zealand; then worked as a tutor at Jounalism School, Wellington Polytechnic; set up publishing business, Cape Catley Press, and The Picton Paper. Discusses being a woman and how this has affected her career; does not believe that she has been hindered because of her sex. Description: Photographs relating to the Wellington Polytechnic's journalism course, which Christine Cole Catley taught between 1966 and 1973. The images were taken by Baigent and Tickner, the Dominion, Liz Brooks and unknown photographers in 1967-1968, and at class reunions in the 1990s and 2000s. Images include formal group portrait of the Polytechnic staff; and shot of Arthur Kinsella (Minister of Education), Robert Norman (Deputy Chairman of Polytechnic Council), and their wives. Also formal and informal group portraits of the journalism students; images of students attending classes, sitting an exam, eating in cafeteria, attending meetings, and visiting a marae. Some photographs include Catley. Also photographs showing mocked up student newspapers. Other sets of images show class reunions of Catley's former students, with people giving speeches, playing guitar, talking, drinking and eating at a restaurant.
