McNab, Donald, 1912-1996

Artist and veteran of the Battle of Crete. Born in Napier and went to Ahuriri School and Napier Technical College. Worked in advertising as a commercial artist before the war. He experienced the Napier earthquake and painted without rest for two days and nights, and daily afterwards, to provide a record of the disaster (See article in Dominion, 27 January 1989, page 6). He later exhibited at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts (1949-1963). His war experience is described in a newspaper article of 23 April 1991 (Napier daily telegraph? - also in Artists' file in D&P; extra details of holding institutions, military career in AT 10/14, 3 September 2001)
