Emigrated with his parents on the 'Lady Nugent' arriving in Wellington in 1841. Son of James Futter (1800-1873) and Frances Futter (née Ford; 1802?-1873). Went to the Australian goldfields, before returning to Wellington where he obtained a license and erected the Ngahauranga Inn on the corner of Hutt Road and Ngauranga Gorge Road; this he rebuilt, calling it the "White Horse Hotel" on the same site. He farmed areas of land in Ngauranga, Raroa, Newlands and Hutt Road, and had an interest in land in Thorndon. Married Sarah Jane (née James; 1851-1882). Died aged 78 years, and was buried in the family plot at Bolton Street Cemetery, Wellington. See MS Papers 2260 (Folder 29)
