Description: Photographs relating to the international expedition to Manuae island, Cook Islands, to observe the solar eclipse of 30 May 1965. Included are - Photographs of Manuae island mostly taken by Karlo A Anderson, resident manager on Manuae. These relate to the solar eclipse of 12 October 1958. Photographs taken on Manuae, during the international expedition's preparations to observe the solar eclipse, May 1965. Proof sheets of photographs of Manuae island taken by a New Zealand Navy photographer showing passage through reef, and facilities on the island, ca 1965. Solar eclipses photographed by the High Altitude Observatory, Boulder, Colorado, 1946 and 1963. Source of title - Title supplied by Library On May 30 1965 a total solar eclipse was observed from the tiny coral atoll of Manuae in the Cook Islands. Scientists came from all over the world to observe this event. The logistical planning for the expedition was done at Mount John Observatory, Tekapo, whose astronomer in charge, Frank Bateson, was the overall leader for the parties from New Zealand, England, Australia, United States, Japan, and Russia. Description: Comprises letter from I W Swan to Evans (1944) giving background to his association with the 1911 British Eclipse Expedition and enclosing his four page account of his time with the expedition in which he describes the members and crew, the scientific and photographic work done at Vavau, the setting up of the eclipse clock, the eclipse itself on 29 April and their departure on 4 May for Suva and Sydney. Description: The top half of the cartoon is a zig-zag graph, with the peaks representing a welcome to the Japanese Prime Minister, a drinker celebrating the change to 10 o'clock closing of pubs, and a farmer leaping for joy because some wool has been sold. The troughs show new bank charges, more troops to Vietnam and a family waving farewell to the Governor General Sir Bernard Fergusson. The second half shows three vignettes, an eclipse of the sun (outlook normal), emotional exhaustion and a person in bed for a long weekend, with a do not disturb sign.
