Painter, art teacher, educationalist and writer. Born in Wellington, educated at Palmerston North and Wellington Technical College. Worked as an artist for the Railways Department and later for the Southern Railway Company in England. Became commercial art tutor at Dunedin School of Art, 1932 and head of the School in 1937. Appointed superintendant of art and craft for the Department of Education in 1946, where he revolutionised art teaching in New Zealand and the Pacific. Founded the Northern Maori Project, incorporated Maori craft and song into general curriculum, and recognised the importance of Maori art. Wrote on Maori and Pacific art, and education.
