Description: Copies of letters to Douglas' daughters left behind in England are included in Douglas' diary. The first letter written during the voyage describes activities on board, including mention of her daughter Robina teaching a class of children. Another written soon after arrival describes conditions in Wellington where the family was accommodated initially in a New Zealand Company house. Also included in the diary are records of family births, deaths and marriages to 1872, together with household accounts, recipes and medical remedies. Source of title - Supplied title Douglas Mary McKain, a widow, emigrated to New Zealand with one daughter and four sons on the "Olympus" which arrived in Wellington, 20 Apr 1841. Description: The records comprise minute books of the Auxiliary 1929-1988, correspondence 1955-1970 and a small amount of financial records. Also includes scrapbooks covering the period 1961-1988 containing photographs and newspaper clippings relating to the Wellington Free Ambulance Service and the work of the Auxiliary. The Wellington Free Ambulance Ladies Auxiliary was formed in February 1929 to raise funds for the Wellington Free Ambulance service. During its 60 years in operation the Auxiliary worked to raise funds for ambulances and equipment. The Auxiliary disbanded in 1988 due, partly, to falling membership. Description: Constance Marie Budd, always known as `Dickie', was born in Eketahuna 1912. Outlines family background - paternal grandfather, Waldin, born in New Zealand, a farmer - maternal grandfather, Suisted, was Swedish, settled at Pahiatua. Recalls grandfather clearing the bush with explosives etc. Father, a farmer, moved from farm at Rongomai between Eketahuna and Pahiatua, to Takapau, Hawkes Bay in 1917 - mother, Grace Suisted died suddenly during the Flu Epidemic 1918. Topics discussed include: Flu Epidemic; childhood; family home; relations with step-mother; domestic help in the home; religion; politics; sex education; social life; fashion in the 1930s; Napier earthquake 1931; Martinborough earthquake 1942 with reference to part played by Dr Budd; Depression 1930s. Describes nursing career which began in 1931, training at Masterton hospital. Gives details of working conditions. Met Dr Harry Budd in Opotoki, where he was Medical Superintendent of Opotoki Hospital, and married him after three months. Describes Dr Budd's work in Westland when he flew around recruiting for the Army. Moved to Martinborough in 1941. Gives first impressions of Martinborough. Mentions the `Night cart' driven by Honey Ross. Feels the place hasn't grown very much in the 42 years she has lived there. Recalls coming to New Zealand in 1923 with adopted father, mother and brother, travelling on the `Corinthic' . Describes adopted father's practice as a medical practitioner in Auckland and later in Wellington and explains cost of medical care and the government's contribution to unemployed patients. Mentions father's efforts to collect medical samples which he distributed to patients who couldn't afford to buy medicine. Talks about Depression (slump) and Health Camps for children starting in Otaki. Describes work prospects during Depression. Recalls being able to vote at age 21 years. Refers to Mr Anderton, a herbalist from Mt Eden, who became an MP and his connection with [Sir] Roger Douglas. Describes experiences of father-in-law during World War One and husband's experiences during World War Two. Talks about adopted father's involvement with the Welsh Society, being Vice President for a year in 1930 and also on committee to amend rules of the Society.
