McIntosh album 14

Date: [Between 1899 and 1903?]

By: Barltrop, George William, 1863-1946

Reference: PA1-o-298

Description: Album of photographs, most of which were probably taken by George William Barltrop, between about 1899 and 1903. They include scenes in the South Island in the Otago area, around Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown, the Arrow River, Shotover River, Lake Hayes and the Remarkables. One sequence shows the barque `Gladys' at Queen's Wharf (?), Wellington, probably in February 1903, with major damage to masts and sails, and a group portrait of sailors, presumably from the `Gladys'. One group portrait shows Frederick Augustus Bennett (later Bishop), with another Maori clergyman, and two European clergymen; a second image shows three different Maori clergymen. Several photographs show scenes of public interest, including a peace demonstration, celebrations for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902; a group of soldiers marching along Vivian Street, before leaving for the South African War in 1899; and two views of a major landslide in the manawatu Gorge in which a large group of men and women (passengers from a train), had to leave the train and walk across the slip, while workmen helped carry their belongings. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Physical Description: Album with dark green cover, entitled `Photographs'; 16.0 x 22.5 cm

Reid album 3

Date: [Circa 1902 to 1911]

From: Bothamley family: Papers and photographs

By: Easter, Theophilus, 1832-1913; Zachariah, Joseph, 1867-1965

Reference: PA1-o-432

Description: Photographs chiefly taken around Wellington Harbour and Queen Charlotte Sound, mostly related to yachting. Taken by unidentified photographers, except one taken by Theophilus Easter, and three taken by Zak [Joseph Zachariah]. Many of the scenes are linked with the Thorndon Dinghy Club, with named yachts which include the 'Rona' and the 'Iorangi', both owned by Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull. Some of the names are illegible, most being written in pencil which has become faint. There is one photograph of Turnbull on his yacht 'Rona' (p 153/1), and two postcards signed by him (p 162 (verso)). One reads " Opening of season Thorndon Dinghy Club. Best wishes to you [each?]. A.H.T."; and the other reads "Opening of the Thorndon Dinghy Club season. Taken from Norton's Shed. Note extension of breast work. Kia ora. A.H.T." (p 162/1, 162/4) There are four loose, unidentified photographs inserted in an envelope at the front of the album. On the last page there are three photographs taken by Zak [i.e. Joseph Zachariah] in 1911. The first one shows the start of the first class yacht race for the P.N.Y.C. (Port Nicholson Yacht Club) Regatta in 1911, and the other two show the yacht 'Muritai', taken on the same day. Other yachts pictured include 'Ruru' and 'Miru'. Quantity: 1 album(s). Physical Description: Album with black cover, red spine; diagonal gold bars above and below the title `Scrap album'; impressed picture of an ostrich in lower right corner; 26.0 x 32.5 cm Processing information: The album has some original page numbers written in pencil. Most of these have been lost or have been applied inconsistently. The digitised version of this album has applied a straight numbering that does not incorporate this earlier numbering on the original object.
