Description: Comprises 54 photographs, most taken by Stacy Woodard in 1933, of whaling at Whangamumu. Also includes a modern copy photograph of Stacy Woodard. Photographs PAColl-10758-01 to PAColl-10758-18 show Herbert Cook and others from the Whangamumu whaling station re-enacting a circa 1870s whale hunt, complete with a replica boat built especially for the re-enactment. PAColl-10758-19 to PAColl-10758-38 show current early 1930s practices, using a motorboat. These latter photographs also show the dead whale being cut up, blubber piled on the shore, and men processing the remains in large cooking pots. The first 38 photographs are numbered 1 - 37; two photographs are numbered "23" (PAColl-10758-01 and PAColl-10758-38). The remaining photographs are not numbered but continue documenting the expedition; three of them are duplicates of photographs in the numbered sequence. Photographs include a dryplate (PAColl-10758-54) taken circa 1870s which was given to Stacy Woodard, and which has been duplicated in the numbered sequence. Title supplied by Library. Photocopy of index to first 38 photographs is in box with photographs. Arrangement: 38 of the photographs were in an envelope labeled "Original Photos + Numbered List", the remaining 12 were in another envelope labeled "Extra photos undescribed". The photograph of Stacy Woodard was in a separate envelope.
