Stack, Frederick Rice, -1873

A professional soldier and a Major in the British Army. Arrived Auckland, 1857 and returned to England in April 1862. He acted as a staff officer to Colonel Robert Henry Wynyard from 1847 to 1858 when Wynyard left New Zealand. Stack then worked for Wynyard's successor, Colonel Charles Gold. An artist, he was particularly known for lithographs by Day and Son after his drawings or paintings 'Six views in the Province of Auckland' published in London in 1862. In 1860, according to Una Platts' 'Nineteenth century New Zealand artists ...' (Christchurch, 1980) 'he painted the Wynyard family outside their [Auckland] home from memory'. See also NZ National Bibliography Part 2 p 978 / Bagnall, listing his 'Six views' and his 'Military law ... 1860-63 ... general court-martial in New Zealand ... [London, 1864] concerning his own court-martial in Auckland and dismissal from the army for disobedience of orders. He had been under arrest for four months before the trial, which lasted for 31 days. The latter publication contains strong allegations against Colonel Gold and Army Stores administration.
