Brandon, Louise Elizabeth, 1877-1945

Nursing sister. Member of staff at Apia Hospital during World War I (Serial No 22/106). Daughter of Henry Eustace de Bathe Brandon. Donor in appreciation of the Library's services in 1939, at which time her address was Kelvin Chambers, The Terrace, Wellington. Died in 1945 aged 67 years.

Description: Standing male figures in pre-colonisation Maori style. Carvings attributed to Hartley Myers at the suggestion of writer Michael King (February 1997). He knew Mr Myers, then resident at Paremata, (1950s or 1960s?), was familiar with other similar wood-carvings by Mr Myers (including the Governor-General's official chair in Parliament) and was told by Mr Myers that examples of his work were held in the Alexander Turnbull Library. As these are the only Maori-style carvings in the Library, it seems likely that these are Mr Myers' work. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Description: Wooden bowl for kava-drinking ceremonies in either Fiji or Samoa. While the bowl was given to the Library in good faith as the former property of Robert Louis Stevenson during his time in Samoa, photographs (and a drawing by Stevenson's daughter) of Stevenson with a kava bowl he owned show him with a different, 4-legged Samoan-style kava bowl. This bowl is a Fijian-style bowl. He may have owned two kava bowls. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Physical Description: Wooden hand-carved circular bowl on 14 legs, with a twisted wire for hanging attached to a section below the bowl 175 x ca 442 mm.
