Description: Copy of diary kept by John Greenfield of his emigration from Glasgow to Invercargill in 1908. Greenfield departed Glasgow for London on Thursday 17 September 1908 then sailed on the RMS 'Corinthic' from London on 18 September. He arrived in Wellington on 4 November, transhipped to Lyttelton on the 'Mararoa' on 5 November 1908, and reached his final destination of Invercargill, via train, on 6 November 1908. Topics he writes about include: his quarters, cabin mates, life on board the ship, the weather, his excursions as a tourist, a suffragettes demonstration, visiting Cape Town, sea sickness, and discomforts. Title transcribed from item. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Physical Description: Hand written on loose paper bound together with string and a split-pin. Provenance: Copy was created from the original after Greenfield's arrival in New Zealand. Processing information: Conservation treatment applied due to the fragile condition of the original material. Treatment included removal of the original split pin and thread binding, flattening of pages, and repair of torn of pages. Also, the last page was attached to a backing sheet. Treatment completed 4 July 2022.

He describes visiting his family in Westport prior to sailing on 15 January and wrote fairly regularly though not daily in his diary of events at sea, his physical condition, land passed, port visited, the weather and related matters. He suffered from asthma and sea sickness.
