Comprises juvenile writings and drawings, school exercises, diaries, private letters, notes, university essays, notes and assignments, papers relevant to Helen's activities on the Victoria University Students Association, and later the New Zealand University Students Association, and in her interests and causes in which she was active, particularly drama and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Also includes material on theatre, including theatre programmes and other material. The collection provides an activist's view of the student life and politics of the time, and also on the life of a woman from a prominent family growing up in the waning years of the twentieth century. Description: Shirley Smith's record of a tour that included Scotland where she visited family menbers, a Girl Guide camp, and scenic places, historic towns and buildings. There are photographs of her with people, one group of images taken on an English beach. All of these images date from 1936. In 1937 she visited Greece, the Greek Islands including Crete, Germany (Munich), Austria (Vienna), Hungary (Budapest), Italy (Venice), and Switzerland (Lucerne). In spring 1938 she was back in Britain with family members and there are groups of images that are probably relations and others of friends.
