Reference: fMS-097

Description: A collection of documents associated with the Hobson family with a list of contents compiled by G H Scholefield, Hobson's biographer. Contains (1) Letter dated 4 April [1840] from William Hobson to his wife and enclosing his holograph diary 15 March to 3 April while he was recovering from a severe left hemisphere hemiplegia (stroke) with consequent paralysis. (2) Memorial (petition) for a bounty from Eliza A Hobson to Lord Stanley, 4 December 1843: "Zealously, courageously and disinterestedly did Governor Hobson endeavour to carry into effect the instructions of Her Majesty's Government ... Finding herself in the sad state of a widow with five children ...". (3) Letter dated 16 December 1841 from Kemara and other chiefs to Hobson with a translation in the hand of George Cooper. The tenor of the letter is to support the Governor and to distance the chiefs from the crime of the murderer Makutu and to assuage the fears of the British over the prospect of unrest: "Sir, Makutu alone is answerable for his conduct, we had nothing to do with it, we leave that man to you [for trial], let us not see him again ...". Many of the signatories are chiefs who signed the Treaty of Waitangi and these are identified in the names field below. (4) Letter written at Paihia, 24 December 1841 signed by various chiefs, named below: "Governor, this is our letter to you, it was owing to a mistake that our names were not attached to Pomare's letter and to Kawiti's also ... we have nought disturbing or an evil intention towards Europeans ...". (5) Translation of a letter from Noble Panakareao, one of the principal chiefs of the Northern District. This is a translation from Maori by William Colenso of Panakareao's letter to Hobson of 5 May, responding to the Governor's printed circular (Williams 53, dated 27 April 1840). The letter offers land and resulted in W. Shortland's visit to Kaitaia for the Treaty signing there. Associated documents including the reply are in fMS-Papers-2227. Slane, Christopher, 1957- :"Why is everyone looking at me?" 29 July 2011

Date: 2011

From: Slane, Christopher, 1957-: Digital cartoons published in the Listener, New Zealand Herald, or New Zealand Farmers' Weekly

By: Listener (Periodical)

Reference: DCDL-0018480

Description: A man representing the 'right wing' blows an enormous dog-whistle that represents 'Dog whistle politics' and says 'Why is everyone looking at me?' Nearby is a grave covered with flowers which has a headstone bearing the word 'Norway'. Context - On 22 July there were two terror attacks in Norway. The suspect is Anders Behring Breivik, a far-right activist, who shot dozens of young people who were attending a Labour-Party youth wing camp on Utoya Island near Oslo and another seven in a bombing in Oslo - in all he killed 77 people. Dog-whistle politics is defined in www.doubletongued.org as a concealed, coded, or unstated idea, usually divisive or politically dangerous, nevertheless understood by the intended voters. It appears that the message was so strong that no-one could possibly fail to understand its import. Quantity: 1 digital cartoon(s).
