McKenzies (N.Z.) Ltd

J R McKenzie Ltd

General merchandise retail store company established by John Robert Hugh McKenzie (1876-1955). The first McKenzies store opened in Dunedin in 1910, followed by a branch in Christchurch, and a Wellington store in 1912. Circa 1928-1930 the New Zealand stores converted to the American 'five and dime' department model. The company grew to 70 stores in New Zealand unitl the business was acquired by L D Nathan and Company in 1980. The McKenzies stores then became part of the Nathan owned Woolworths brand in New Zealand.

The original Wellington store was located at 68 Willis Street.New building in 1933.
