Description: Transparencies of concrete construction in New Zealand, taken by Geoffrey Thornton or Jocelyn Thornton. Each slide mount is annotated with the name or brief description, and/or the location, of the concrete structure. Dates and photographer name are sometimes annotated. Buildings/structures and locations annotated on the slide mounts include cement works manager's house at Mahurangi [Warkworth], dairy at Maraekakaho, Firth's tower near Matamata, Public Trust Office in Napier, Devonport Flats in New Plymouth, former Egmont Brewery in New Plymouth, former dairy factory at Ngatea, hangar interior at Ohakea, cookshop at Okuku Pass Station, Aotea canoe memorial at Pātea, concrete tankstand at Bedford Road in Taranaki, Metze house at Pleasant Point, concrete house at 74 Te Nga Wai Road in Pleasant Point, hall and library at Portland, and 'Mercerdale' at Puerua. Title supplied by Library. Few slides have dates annotated Arrangement: Transparencies were arranged in a six-row, 43 slides per row, metal case. The case was not labelled; the order appears have begun as largely alphabetical by location, name of building/structure, or name of station/farm; however, arrangement becomes more disordered in the last two rows of the case. Photographs include various buildings seriously damaged, including the hospital, the Masonic Hotel, Public Trust offices in Napier and in Hastings, the Hastings Post Office, and a view of the Napier Park Refugee Camp. Further sequences show areas of interest in New Zealand, including an early photograph of the Pink and White Terraces taken by Charles S Spencer (before the Tarawera eruption in 1886); the Government Sanatorium in Rotorua showing various therapeutic facilities and treatments including diathermy treatment, the private slipper bath, the auxiliary massage douche and the cooling room; a group of men working on carvings at the Rotorua School of Maori Arts and Crafts; members of the Rotorua Hunt Club riding out; Chateau Tongariro interior and exterior views; the Blue Baths in Rotorua; Akitio Homestead and Maunsell's Homestead (Tinui); the Hermitage and Tasman Chalet at Mount Cook (Aoraki); and the Government Accomodation House at Waitomo.
