Famous Australian cricketer during the 1970s and 1980s. A record-breaking batsman, he was also captain of Australia from 1975-1977, and from 1979 until his retirement in 1983. In New Zealand he is particularly infamous because of the 'underarm incident' of 1981, when he ensured New Zealand defeat in a closely-fought one-day game by instructing his bowler to bowl the last ball of the game underam.

Chappell, Greg, 1948- : Press statement relating to the 1981 'underarm' incident
Date: Feb 1981
By: Chappell, Gregory Stephen, 1948-
Reference: MS-Papers-9698
Description: A brief, typed statement, signed by Chappell in which he stated his regret at the incident. "I have always played cricket within the rules of the game. I took a decision yesterday which whilst within the laws of Cricket, in the cool light of day I recognise as not being within the spirit of the game. The decision was made whilst I was under pressure and in the heat of the moment. I regret the decision. It is something I will not do again. Chappell further added that he would not be making any additional comment until at least the end of the Benson & Hedges Cup Finals." Chappell was a noted Australian cricketer in the 1970s and 1980s. Despite his fine record as a batsmen he is best known by many in New Zealand as the instigator of the infamous "underarm' incident during a tense one-day game against New Zealand. With one ball to go New Zealand needed a six to tie the game. Chappell instructed his younger brother, Trevor, to bowl underarm, thereby denying the New Zealand batsman the chance to hit a six. The action was widely condemned as unsportsmanlike. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (1 leaf). 0.01 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Mss, typescript
