Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet

Classical ballet company established in 1947 and based at Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, then known as the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet (as distinct from the then called Sadler's Wells Ballet based at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). In 1955 moved to Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, becoming the touring unit of the Sadler's Wells Ballet. In 1956 both companies received Royal Charter: the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet became the Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet, the former Sadler's Wells Ballet bacame the Royal Ballet. The Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet returned to Sadler's Wells Theatre in 1970 maintaining their touring function. Performed in 1990 as part of NZ International Festival of the Arts. Later that year became Birmingham Royal Ballet when the company moved to Birmingham Hippodrome theatre. In 1997 became fully independent of the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera House.
