Caption on back of file print reads: "Waimate North featured prominently in New Zealand's early history. Among other things here was established the first Flour Mill to serve the growing population of the Bay of Islands, and the numerous trading and whaling vessels visiting the area. The first building no longer stands, only in recent years have the last traces disappeared apart from crubling foundations and excavations. The second Flour Mill to be built in New Zealand still stands however, as depicted in this photograph. This Mill was established in 1850 by the pioneering family Bedggood & Sons. It had a brief history - wheat growing in the North came to a standstill in 1862 with the boom of the Kauri gum industry. In photograph is Mr W E Bedggood, whose grandfather and father founded the Flour Mill those many years ago.
