Davies, Owen (Capt), 1813-1899

Born in Llangrannog, Wales. Was the son of Enoch Davies and Sarah (née Owen). Was baptised on the 13th of August 1813. His first marriage was to Mary Ann Morris, Hobart, Tasmania on the 8th of March 1837. His second marriage was to Hariata Tarahau, daughter of Chief Hare Hongi II and Te Para Te Kura (Hare Hongi was one of Hongi Hika's sons). This marriage took place at Whangaroa on the 24th of July 1864. Owen was the master of the `Sussex,' a whaling vessel out of Hobart belonging to Charles and Phillis Seal of Hobart. He was still master of this ship in 1863 just prior to him becoming Harbour Master at Whangaroa in July that year. He was the first Harbour Master of Whangaroa, and died there on the 11th of January 1899. (Info from Mrs Helen Webster, great grandaughter of Captain Owen Davies, 2006).
