Son of John Tole (1807?-1879). Auckland from Ireland with his parents and was educated in the Catholic school and at St John's College, Sydney where he graduated LLB 1869. He was admitted to the bar in Auckland in 1872 and commenced to practise. He was a member of the Ponsonby Road Board and member of the Auckland Harbour Board. In 1876 he won the Eden seat in Parliament which he held till 1887. Tole held the portfolio of Minister of Justice in the Stout-Vogel Government of 1884-1887. While in parliament he took a keen interest in law amendment, especially in social directions. The adoption of children and first offenders probation acts were introduced by him. In 1888 Tole resumed his practise at the bar and in 1892 was appointed crown solicitor in Auckland. (Dictionary of New Zealand Biography / Scholefield)

Description: Postcard soliciting a vote for candidate Joseph A Tole in the General Election of 1884 (held on a Tuesday). Tole promises to serve his constituents faithfully and hopes that he can rely on their vote "in this political crisis". This card is addressed in handwriting on the verso, to Charles Johns esqr, upholsterer, Karangahape Road, Newton. The one penny stamp is preprinted on to the card. The postmark date is 14 July 1884. Primarily includes material about the life and work of Charles and John Tole, uncles of Jeny Curnow, and her father the architect George Tole. Also material related to a Clarkson family reunion in 2002, including family trees and photographs. Taken from original enclosure. Arrangement: Originally housed in a file box labelled “Toles + Clarkson | George Tole | Charles Tole” and “AC 9d". The file box contained several manila folders. It arrived at the Library in a transit box along with several photo albums and other photographs housed in manila envelopes. Quantity: 9 folder(s). Provenance: This material was collected and created by Jeny Curnow until her death in 2013. In the possession of her step-sons Tim and Wystan Curnow after that time. Processing information: Material was rehoused from manila folders into archival folders for storage and preservation reasons. Photocopies of annotations on the original folders were kept with the material. The original folders were not kept.
