Born in Australia. A journalist and editor of `The Worker', and secretary Auckland Waterside Workers', Fellmongers, Coopers, Quarrymen, and President of Curriers' Union. Socialist party candidate for Auckland East in 1905, Ohinemuri in 1908, New Zealand Labour Party candidate for Auckland East in 1919, Waitemata in 1922 and Parnell in 1925. Dropped out of active politics after allegedly becoming financially committed to the reformer C J Parr. He was also an etcher, who did portraits of Maori (some based on earlier photographs) and at least one church interior, 1922-1930s. He signed his work either as R F Way or as Fred Way. He sketched for the `Maoriland worker'. Mentioned in Elsie Locke's 'Student at the gates', p. 110, as having a commercial art studio near the Auckland waterfront in the early 1930s.
