What you'll learn

This seminar is about ways to make literature come alive for every single child. It is about harnessing the power of children's and YA books to engage students in learning and give them language and ideas to explore and enlarge their world.

This seminar is the first in a series for school leaders, teachers, and librarians supporting the role school communities play in building a nation of readers and enabling students to experience stories that will stay with them through their lifetime.

During the day, we'll explore:

  • why reading for pleasure is so important and how, as a reading role model, you can communicate that joy to your students
  • how to extend your knowledge and understanding of children’s and young adult books and ways to fully realise their potential in your classroom, across the curriculum
  • strategies to enrich the reading culture in your classroom and use children’s literature to inspire students' writing
  • strategies to increase their understanding of the world and the complexities of the human experience through developing imagination and empathy.

What you'll do

  • Explore the research that supports the importance of reading for pleasure and its place in teaching and learning.
  • Explore the concept and importance of teachers and library staff as reading role models.
  • Discover the elements of picture books and sophisticated picture books and how these can be used in the library and classroom at all levels.
  • Explore and discuss ways to promote reading for pleasure in the classroom and library.
  • Reflect on new ideas and create an action plan for sharing back at school in the classroom or library.
