Interview with Stuart Porter conducted by Daniel Beban. Topics include: Family background and upbringing; education; moving to Bangkok; visual arts; early attempts at playing music and playing the saxophone; influence of Peter Baker; meeting Anthony Donaldson and Gerard Crewdson; Wellington Artists’ Cooperative; forming, rehearsing, recording, performing, and touring with Primitive Art Group; crossover between the punk scene and improvised music; formation of Braille Collective; bands related to the collective including Black Sheep and Six Volts; appearance on ‘Nock on Jazz’ television programme; workshop at Wellington Polytechnic music school; tension between members of the collective; break up of Primitive Art Group; drug use; painting; ensembles formed following end of Primitive Art Group - God, and Tongue; move to Dunedin; changes in attitude to making music; comparisons between the current music scene (circa 2014) and the 1980s, and scenes in large cities versus smaller cities.
