Description

Three shipboard views of Tahiti and surrounding islands. The first panorama shows:

'The Osnaburg Islands due North, 5 miles distant. 14 miles long. Harpley June 11th 1847' and 'View of Taairabut and Otaheite from the east. Distant 20 miles. Harpley 24th May 1847'.

The second panorama shows:

'View of Taairabut [Taiirabut] and Otaheite from the N.E. distant 6 miles. Harpley 25 May 1847.'

The third panorama shows:

'View of the Crown and harbour of Papieti. Otaheite. Harpley 26th June 1847 (4 miles).'

In 1967 Captain Samuel Wallis (1728-1795) of the H.M.S. Dolphin, named the volcanic island now known as Mehetia, Osnaburg Island, in honour of the second son of George III, Frederick Augustus (1763-1827), who held the title of Bishop of Osnaburg (Osnabruck) in the German electorate of Hanover. A wash drawing of Osnaburg Island by Samuel Wallis is now in the National Library of Australia.

He also named Tahiti King George III's Island.
