Te Aro House Drapery Co. Ltd

Company established by James Smith in Wellington in 1866, when he opened a drapery in Cuba Street. He named the building Te Aro House, and the business was frequently advertised as simply 'Te Aro House'. The business had financial difficulties in 1898, and Smith moved premises to another site in Cuba Street; however the names 'Te Aro House Drapery Co Ltd.' and 'Te Aro House' were still being used in the 1900s. The business was also known as 'James Smith' from 1886 and later became known as 'James Smith and Sons', and then as simply 'James Smith's'.
