Homestead originally built in 1868 by brothers Captain Azim Salvatore Birch (1837-1923) and William John Birch (1842-1920), the first European settlers in the ranges between Rangitikei and Hawke's Bay. The farm was originally named Erewhon, and was renamed Oruamatua in 1897 by Azim Birch. The land and buildings were sold to to Thomas Henry Lowry (1865-1944) in 1906, and subsequently to Frederick Ronald Cottrell. The homestead is a Category 1 Historic Place, listed with the address 838 Taihape-Napier Road, Moawhango.
