Homewood (Wellington, N.Z.)

Homewood Residence located at 50 Homewood Avenue, Karori, Wellington, began as a large cottage for Wellington judge Henry Samuel Chapman (1803-1881) in 1847. In 1852 the house passed into the hands of businessman John Johnston (1809-1887), whose son Sir Charles John Johnston (1845-1918) extensively extended it in 1903 under architect Joshua Charlesworth (1860-1925). Charles Johnston renovated it in the Edwardian Scottish baronial style, evident in the tower and repeated use of crenellations (the notches on a rampart). In 1958 the house became the residence of the British High Commissioner. Listed as an Historic Place Category 1 (List Number 1368).
