Arapuni Power Station (N.Z.)

The first government-built high dam and hydroelectric station constructed on the Waikato River, built between 1924 and 1929, and commissioned in 1929. Power generation commenced in 1930, then had to be discontinued due to cracking in one of the channels. Generation recommenced in 1932. The power station pioneered the development of the Waikato Valley Hydro Electric Power Programme. Refurbished in 1990 and 2000. Owned by Mighty River Power after the privatisation of the Electricity Corporation.
