Rotorua School of Māori Arts and Crafts

Rotorua Carving School

Established by the Māori Arts and Crafts Act 1926. The carving school, Te Āo Marama, opened in 1927 and was situated at Ohinemutu, Rotorua. Apirana Ngata was instrumental in the establishment of the school, and Harold Hamilton was its Director. In 1932 there was a need for larger premises due to the success of the school, however, with the death of the Director, Harold Hamilton, in 1937, coupled with the economic recession and the imminent onset of World War II, the school was closed. Nearly 30 years later the school re-opened with the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute Act in 1963.
