HMS Archilles (Ship : 1936-1941)

Achilles was originally built for the Royal Navy, and was commissioned as HMS Achilles on 10 October 1933. Warship of the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy. Together with the 'Ajax', she sank the German warship 'Admiral Graf Spee' on the 13th of December, 1939. She would serve with the Royal Navy's New Zealand Division from 31 March 1937 up to the creation of the Royal New Zealand Navy, into which she was transferred in September 1941 and recommissioned HMNZS Achilles. Her crew was approximately 60 per cent from New Zealand.

HMS Achilles officers and crew received a homecoming parade on 23 February 1940 to welcome home the heroes of the Battle of River Plate.
