Mark Winter, born 1958, is an editorial cartoonist originally from Invercargill, New Zealand. Winter publishes under the pen-name Chicane, which signifies a deceptive bend. His earliest cartoons appeared in the Otago University publication, Critic, in 1976. Since then, his cartoons have been published in The Southland Times newspaper for over 25 years, and are also published on Stuff.co.nz and via the Twitter feed, @ChicanePictures. Winter holds a Masters degree in semiotics, and served as Invercargill City Councillor from 1983-1998, and Deputy Mayor of Invercargill from 1994-1996. As of 2013, he resides in Greenwich, England.
