Description

Interview with Doug (Douglas) Kingett, born in Sudbury-on-Thames, England, in 1924. Talks about starting to work at the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) in 1989 after he had retired and being asked to help set up the new Science Centre. Describes the Centre, which was based on interactive displays, obtaining exhibitions for it, and employing university students as "explainers". Comments that the cut of Lottery Board funding to MOTAT in the 1990s led to the demise of the Science Centre but he continued as a volunteer. Comments that he worked directly under manager Grant Kirby, serving as acting registrar for a year and then reorganising storage both on-site and off-site. Describes how his experience in moving, handling and storing stock in the commercial world was useful in this work. Refers to having to store artefacts in shipping containers, sometimes outside when they could not be stored under cover. Talks about rationalising the surplus and un-restored tram and road transport vehicles which were stored outside and were deteriorating badly. Comments on various managers and workers at MOTAT, and the Act of Parliament that provided the museum with a reliable income. Mentions manager John Symes who was responsible for getting the pumphouse project under way, and the next director Jeremy Hubbard who continued to make improvements including more staff. Refers to the introduction of computers. Comments on the Museum's acquisition process and that generally it is not MOTAT's policy to purchase artefacts. Refers to "antagonism" between the sections particularly when there is a lack of funding. Describes MOTAT's relationship with other museums including the Auckland Museum. Comments on why he has stayed at MOTAT so long and the camaraderie. Talks about his continuing work on the registration and storage of objects, and unpacking the containers that had been packed in the early 1990s under his supervision.
