Description

New Zealand Race Relations Conciliator from 1992 to 1995. Born in Te Araroa, 1942. Recalls attending Te Araroa School - describes moving to Auckland to attend St Stephen's College. Describes Tikanga Maori at St Steven's College. Discusses attending Auckland Teacher's Training College and describes how he got a job teaching in Maori schools on the east coast of the North Island - mentions Hoani Waititi. Mentions time he spent teaching in Awanui, Wairoa, Te Teko, and at Epuni Primary School. Recalls 'pioneering' the teaching of Te Reo at Wainuiomata College - mentions wife Kathy. Also mentions teaching at Aotea College and being the principal of Ngata Memorial College, Ruatoria.

Recalls getting the Woolfe Fisher Scholarship - describes his study as well as the countries and schools he visited - mentions Eton. Recalls his appointment to the Winston Churchill Trust Board. Discusses his appointment at Wellington High School and Community Institute upon return to New Zealand. Recalls being seconded to the Department of Education. Talks about being invited to take up the position of Race Relations Conciliator - recalls race relations in New Zealand at the time of his appointment. Describes seminars relating to race relations that were organised and run by the Office of the Race Relations Conciliator in conjunction with local government authorities. Discusses the Office's involvement in the Moutoa Gardens dispute, the Whangape dispute and the Conciliator's role in the protests at Waitangi on Waitangi Day - mentions Ken Mair. Discusses how the Office dealt with complaints - discusses biculturalism and multiculturalism.
