Description

John Phillip McMahon born Cue South Australia 1934. Describes schooling at Harrietville State School, Mt Mary's Catholic School, and career plan to become a Roman Catholic Priest in the Franciscan Order, spending time studying before deciding not suitable. Outlines teaching career and further education. Describes first contact with Quakers and becoming a member. Recalls joining Friends House Meeting Toorak, Victoria and was overseer, elder, Deputy Clerk Victoria Regional Meeting and on Faith and Order Commission as Quaker representative for 6 years. Recalls other involvements; Convenor of Peace Association in 1978; Represented Quakers at NGO (non-governmental organisation) meetings; visit to Sydney to hear Adam Curle (ca 1979); member of Vigil for aboriginal justice; New Zealand Yearly Meeting, with reference to John and Diana Lampen and Michael and Merilyn Payne. Also mentions Sexual Awareness Committee which began 1996; Christian Conference of Asia move from ecumenism to pluralism; Interfaith Council with Muslims, with reference to celebration at Edel Fitri; Spiritual Nurture Group; CASI (Churches Agency on Social Issues); Euthanasia; Alternatives to Violence Programm (AVP); Council for Socially Responsible Investment and National Council of Churches.
