Description

Edward Owen Eustace Hill born Winterbourne Park, Bristol 1907. Recalls moving to Wales at the age of six years. Describes family background including maternal grandarents (Bowen family) home at Llwyngwair. Recalls being taught by governess who was trained by the Parents National Education Union (PNEU). Recalls dislike of boarding school because of nerves about the war, the headmaster's temper, bad food, cold climate and chilblains which he describes. Talks about History scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford. Mentions introduction to the Fellowship. Refers to Mrs Schueker who founded the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer.

Discusses involvement with the Oxford Group [Movement], also known as Buchmanites, founded by Dr Frank Buchman. Describes the extensive travel with them to America, Canada, Scandinavia, Denmark and Norway and long travel in South Africa. Recalls meeting future wife, Jean Morton, in Canada who was also a member of the group and marriage in 1937.

Gives reasons for emigrating to New Zealand. Describes ordination in Christchurch 1946, first curacy at St Mary's Merrivale, experience as vicar of Southbridge by Lake Ellesmere for two years, and New Plymouth. Refers to Tristram Holland, Bishop of Waikato. Gives reasons for resigning and describes approach to Junior Chamber of Commerce to stand for Mayor and being elected for three years. Refers to books written by wife under name of Jean O'Hagen Allen. Recalls move to Wellington and reorganising the British Sailor's Society. Mentions Free China Society and attendance at other anti-communist conferences in Bangkok, Tokyo and Saigon. Describes effect of war there. Talks about wife's death and re-marriage.
