Describes starting to write in the early 1980s when she wrote a television script. Comments on the positive response of TVNZ and its final production on television nine years later. Describes its stage production as the play `Roimata' which was done by the Depot Theatre in 1988. Recalls rewriting the original script for stage. Describes being in `Hen's teeth' and working with other Maori women, including Wheti Fowler and Christine Asher, on `Tupaha'. Comments on the importance for her of telling a story rather than pushing an issue. Recalls not enjoying learning at school. Talks about the other play she has written, `Te Hukina'. Discusses the process of writing and writing styles. Mentions a Nelson workshop for Maori women writing. Comments on New Zealand's need for cultural identity.
