Francis Brian Shorland, known as Brian, born 1909. Talks about his choice of career and job at the Department of Agriculture while studying chemistry at university. Describes his research on fish oil in the early 1930s, his graduation in 1932 with first class honours and post-doctoral study in Liverpool. Talks about his return to New Zealand in 1937 and involvement in research on facial eczema, the extraction of Vitamin A from fish liver oils, butter fat and other agricultural chemistry research projects. Describes his research techniques, working relationships at the Department of Agriculture, particularly with the Deputy Director, Grimmett, and his work in the Fats Laboratory of the DSIR.
