Valerie Newton-Howes (nee Pope) describes family background - grandfather, Henry James Pope was inspector of Maori Schools - maternal grandfather, Isadore (Rothy) Rothschild came from Bristol to dig for gold in the West Coast. Recalls childhood, including detailed description of life in Parnell in the 1920s. Describes education, matriculation and decision to be a kindergarten teacher. Recalls kindergartens and life as a kindergarten teacher in the 1930s in Auckland and Wellington. Talks about experiences and work as a VAD worker during World War II, her wedding in 1942, subsequent stay in London during the `Little Blitz' of 1943, and life in London during the war. Recalls return in 1945 to New Zealand, and return to Kindergarten teaching, various kindergartens in Wellington, work sessions, discipline, uniforms worn at some schools, behaviour of parents and recalls kindergarten anecdotes. People mentioned include: Sir Peter Buck who was a great friend of father; Guy Lawrence; Tony Le May and brother Ken Le May; Constance Colgrove; Margaret Archer and Phylis Grey. Mentions the polio epidemic.
