Putiki Waranui, Putiki Warenui, Putiki Wharanui

A well-established pa of the Ngati-Tumango hapu of Whanganui, by the time European settlement Began in the 1840s. Located south across the river from Wanganui City. Some of its better known inhabitants in the 1840s were Te Anaua, Te Mawae and Hipango. The pa was also known as Putiki Wharanui, or Putiki Wharenui or Putiki Warenui. The full name was Putiki-wharanui-a-Tamatea-pokai-whenua, as noted in album of photographs taken by G L Adkin (PA1-o-013, p [5])
