Two letters written by John William Colenso (1814-1883) while he was residing at 23 Sussex Place, Kensington - 1. to Rt Hon John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury (1834-1913), dated 14 Dec 1864; 2. to George Witt (1804-1869), dated 1 May 1865.
Both letters are signed by Colenso with his initials and bishopric, 'JW Natal', as was customary in the Anglican Church at the time. Contemporary annotations on the holographs also identify the author.
Includes transcriptions of letters together with accompanying biographical and contextual notes compiled by Ian St George as articles for the newsletter of the Colenso Society: 'John Colenso, Emerson Tennent, George Witt, Charles Dickens & Charles Bunyon' (eColenso, January 2015); 'Bishop Natal in London ...' (eColenso, April 2015). Also includes a laser-print copy of a photographic portrait of John William Colenso.

John William Colenso was the first Bishop of Natal, holding office from 1853 to his death in 1883; he was the cousin of New Zealand missionary, William Colenso (1811-1899).
