Letter book 4
Letter book by Gray giving an account of military life stationed at a camp at Heliopolis in Egypt, followed by a voyage to France and service on the Western Front.
Describes period from when Gray is on duty as a wagon orderly in Egypt, to his embarkation on the Cunard Line R.M.S. Ascania at Alexandria on 6 April 1916 headed for Marseille in France. The account continues with time spent in France serving as an orderly and stretcher bearer, including detailed first-hand accounts of action on the front. The writer describes troop movements and provides details of medical facilities, the role of the field ambulances, evacuations and medical aid provided to casualties. Some reference is made to the relationship between New Zealand and Australian divisions.
Includes details of his movements and experiences in the French localities of Hazebrouck, Morbecque, Steenwerck and the three months at Armentieres, where he is briefly admitted to hospital.
